East produce amazing retro fit preamps that can be dropped directly into the cavities of most standard Jazz style basses as well as  a number of other circuits to suit a variety of instruments.

Having recently fitted a couple of J-Retro circuits (including one to my own Lakland Joe Osborn 5 string) I can say that I am suitably stunned by the quality and the value of the units.
